Rob's Speaker Stands

(page 2)
The Materials

You shouldn't have any trouble finding the material needed for this project as I live in an area without a lot of resources but I found everything I needed locally (on an island in Hawaii).

2 ea. 1/8" thick steel tops 6" x 6" (size may vary according to your speaker size but should be a little smaller than bottom of speaker).
2 ea. ¾" MDF or Medex bottoms 10" x 11" (can also be of metal or other woods if desired).
4 ea. 1/16" thick 1-3/4" Diameter polished stainless steel tubing (19" long for 22 to 23" stands).
4 ea. 3/8" threaded steel rods 23" or longer if needed.
8 ea. 3/8" nuts for rods.
4 ea. 3/8" washers.
8 ea. ¼" - 20 x 1.5" long stainless allen head bolts.
8 ea. ¼" - 20 stainless nuts.
8 ea. ¼" stainless washers.
8 ea. 1" long custom turned spikes. (optional)

Lead shot or sand fill.

Construction

It is very important to have all 4 of your tubes or pipes exactly the same length and squared on the ends so that your tops and bottoms fit right and your stands end up all squared. When you purchase your tubing from a metal supplier they may or may not be able to do this for you. Mine wasn't so I had to do this myself. What I did was to set up a 90 degree jig on a circular sander and held the tubing against the jig while I pressed the ends against the sanding disc, rotating it while I went along to get them all square and the same length. One thing to be careful of is not to hold the tubes against the sanding discs too long at a time as if you heat up the tubing too much the polishing will discolor and you will have to buff the ends to get rid of it.
