| Grab your portable AM radio that you never use. Spin the dial to the highest frequency possible. Turn it on and listen to the interstation noise. Listen closely as you wave the radio over your cables, racks and components. If you hear slight changes in the interstation noise, you are picking up RFI from your system. (Your system must be on, but not necessarily playing music.) If you don't hear any changes in the interstation noise as you wave it over your equipment, try turning the dial to the opposite end; the lowest frequency possible. If you have serious RFI problems, you will hear obvious changes in the character of the interstation noise. A well shielded system will produce virtually no change in the character of the interstation noise. What to do if you have problems? Try the do-it-yourself AC line filters or Ferrite clamps for the cheapest route. |
