Home Depot/Jo Ann's Fabric
|

I purchased 2 Quik-Forms from the local Home Depot in the 8 in. diameter (also comes in 6,10 or 12 in sizes). These are hard fiber(paper) forms used for pouring concrete and are 48 in. tall. I then purchased 4 yds of black (your choice of colors) craft felt from the local fabric store along with some tacky fabric cement. Cover the forms with the fabric and you're ready to experiment. If you want you can cut the forme in half vertically (use a fine edge hacksaw blade or appropriate saw, 32 or 24 tooth works best) and you can further fine tune your rooms acoustics with these half domes.

I recommend placing the full round tubes in the corners behind the speakers to start with to control the bass resonances. It's best to stuff the hollow tubes with some open cell foam or rolls of paper towels to get the best results.

Like any form of room acoustics you can add more to the side walls and back walls depending on your results. I've found that less at first is more. Too much especially with the heavier fabric can suck the life out of higher frequencies. These are basically taking the place of the much more expensive ASC Tube Traps, which by the way are very good for the money.

The effects are a better and deeper soundstage with a more accurate placement of instruments and voices plus a more natural rendition of midrange, both lower and upper in my system. My listening is of the nearfield type due to my smaller room dimensions, 12x14x8.

You may want to experiment with a thinner fabric if the craft felt over does it on the top-end.
