Construction
20mm thick granite (5 shelves) - £400 Threaded Rod (3x 36 inches) - £9 Spikes (6, 3 for top and 3 for bottom) made by a friend - £Case of beer. Wood posts 100x100mm, 150mm high (Holes drilled through the center) - £150

Setup
In this tweak you are the designer, so a lot is up to you. My stand has 3 legs for stability, but 4 would be fine. The shelves are cut from granite (lots of different types are available) and highly polished for a good finish. Holes are cut to accommodate the threaded rod and also a larger one somewhere on the shelf for cable management (Again, sizes are dependent on amount of cable and plug sizes). My top shelf does not have a cable management hole as I do not have a turntable. With the spikes for the bottom already fastened to one end of the rod load the first granite shelf on followed by 3 pre-drilled wooden block, followed by another shelf and so on until you have your top shelf. You may need to trim your rod to accommodate your top spikes but after that you are done.

Use
As a HiFi stand

Performance
HiFi stands are a bone-of-contention. Some people think they add quality to sound and some people don't. I would say it is in the mind. The main attributes of good stands seems to be weight and stability, thus reducing vibration. My stand will weigh 150lb approx. (70kg). The main point of a stand in my mind is aesthetics, and believe me when I say this stand looks the dogs danglies.

Other
Depending on your floor, it might be a good idea to have some matching granite casters made as the weight of this stand when loaded with equipment can be extremely heavy. Marble may be used but i was advised that it wasn't as strong.
