Use Brasso polish to make scratchy CD's like new again

Source Brand
Thought it up while listening to a skipping CD. Brasso

Construction
Get some Brasso and low abrasion cloth (eyeglass cloth) handy...

Setup
To fix the scratched cd is very simple, get a moderate amount of Brasso on the cloth and wipe it generously on the CD (from the center out, never in circular motion!) This may require some elbow grease to get rid of deep scratches. just go about it as if you were polishing brass. When done, buff it to a shiny clean polished surface with a clean peice of cloth and your set!

Use
Polish any laser written surface enamel to a shine.

Performance
I examined prodigous results after such polishing on audio and data CD's. After polishing, the cd never skipped, not even on a really cheap cd player and the audio reproduction was immaculate. I have had friends try this and they were pleased with the results, so I recommend this tweak to anybody, even if your CD's don't skip, it might make them sound better.

Emily What is Brasso and where can I buy it? And is there anything else I can use to get scratches out of my CD's??

Thank You!

Tom Beware! Don't do it too often or too heavily as CD players rely on the thickness of the CD to focus the laser beam, too thin a surface may cause it to not focus correctly or cause the corrective circuits to work hard and all your hard work would be wasted! However, on a positive note, this trick also works very well on the perspex display covers on many pieces of hifi equipment, I used it on my trusty CD80 and suddenly the display was legible!

Gary Brasso is a liquid polish from the UK. Any fine polish will also do the job. Even toothpaste can handle very fine scratches. If you can find it, jewellers rogue would be great as well, which is also another fine polish. Don't try 'car polish' products. They are usually too powerful for the job.

Renee Pledge furniture polish works good for me.Not Liquid Gold ! Be sure it's the type in the spray can and wipe the cd gently multiple times.

Tim Regarding where to get brasso from, I found some in Tesco much to my surprise as neither Sainsburys or Wilkinsons seemed to have any. I paid about #1.50 for 150ml as a guide as to what is reasonable. (I'm in the UK). However it hasn't fixed my CD yet after several attempts although I think maybe I need a better cloth than the oold t-shirt I am using at the monent. I may need more elbow grease and a better cloth takeing better care. Also I notice that CDs are actually transparent (you can see a light through it) there is also a hole in the 'silver at one point on the edge of mine but iI think it is in an 'unused area' maybeI have less visible holes in key areas? Mind it did used to work (sometimes). I am a bit concerned that previous attempts at cleaning might have made this hole? Anyway I will give it another go.
