I read about this in a magazine article on subwoofers.

This tweak requires two bottles of your favorite beer.

Place one speaker at your favorite listening position, on its stand if it has one, and hooked up to the stereo system. Move the chair or couch if necessary to get the speaker at exactly the position on the floor layout that your body normally occupies. Point the speaker into the approximate area you expect to end up placing it. Set the balance control so that only this speaker is driven.

Playing your typical kind of music, slowly walk around the area that the speaker is to be situated in. As you get very close to a wall, the amount of bass will increase, but may sound excessive or boomy. When you hear smooth, even bass place one of the beer bottles on the floor between your feet. Do the same for the other speaker position. Replace the beer bottles with the speakers, align them for imaging and reset the balance control.

You end up with extended smooth bass in about ten minutes. No other set up method I've tried gives as good a result with so little wear and tear on the back or the patience.

Sit back and enjoy your two beer and the improvement to your listening pleasure.
